Start your semester with some sessions designed to help you achieve academic success. Come to one or all sessions tailored to Economics and Business students and funded by the Faculty. Places are not limited so registration is not necessary.

Week 2 - Skills Workshops (Postgraduate Students)

Refine your academic skills! Give your assignments the edge!

The Faculty is running free workshops focussing on specific skills for postgraduate students in Economics and Business.

What are the workshops about?

Seminar Presentation & Critical Thinking (2 hours)
Covers how to present a good seminar paper and the critical thinking that is the basis of all academic discourse.

The Sentence as the Basis of Academic Writing (2 hours)
Considers the fineness of meaning necessary in sentence level grammar for clear logical argument.

Analysing the Assignment Question (2 hours)
Provides strategies for identifying the focus of the question and investigating how the wording of the question affects the structure of the response.

Developing an Argument (2 hours)
Focuses on developing an argument from relevant literature, and on presenting that argument with evidence to support it. It involves synthesising and evaluating information to substantiate a point of view.

Quoting, Summarising and Paraphrasing Evidence (2 hours)
Helps students to understand the use of evidence for their own specific writing purpose, to identify the differences between quoting and reporting, and to practise language strategies to help avoid plagiarism.

Introduction to Critical Reading (2 hours)
Introduces the process of critical thinking and reading, and practices strategies for evaluating and asking critical questions about your reading.

Introduction to Critical Writing (4 hours: 2hrs x2)
Covers developing and demonstrating a critical perspective within essays and critical reviews. Includes examples and writing practice with focus on structure and language features.
