Changes to the Master of Business / Graduate Diploma in Business in 2009

Information for Continuing Students

Following a review of postgraduate coursework programs in 2007 the Faculty of Economics and Business is proposing the Master of Business / Graduate Diploma in Business no longer be offered to commencing students. Accordingly the core units for the Business programs will not be available from 2009. Students currently enrolled in a Business degree or Diploma will, of course, be able to continue and complete their program. Units similar to the core Business units will be offered in other degrees in 2009, so students enrolled in the Business courses will be able to complete their degree or diploma without substantial change in course content.

Special Consideration – New policy for 2008

If you are unable to sit an exam or submit an assignment on time due to serious illness or misadventure, you may be eligible to apply for Special Consideration (SC).

What to do if you are sick for an exam:

  1. Obtain a special consideration form from the Student Centre Website or the Student Information Office (SIO).
  2. See a doctor immediately, preferably before the exam, and have the doctor complete the Professional Practitioner’s Certificate (PPC) attached to the Special Consideration form.
  3. IF you can see a doctor before the exam, and the doctor indicates on the PPC that you are 'moderately' or more severely affected, it is recommended that you don’t sit the exam and apply for Special Consideration immediately.
  4. IF you can’t see a doctor until after the exam, you need to decide whether or not to sit the exam. If you choose to sit the exam, you should note that you will NOT be granted any extra marks for your exam, and you may still be required to sit a further test even if you pass the initial exam.
  5. You have one week from the date of the exam to submit a fully completed special consideration form to the SIO.

For assignments/essays, please note that you must apply for SC before the due date. If you are sick during the preparation period for an assignment, you should apply for SC before the due date, and submit the assignment as soon as you can. Don’t wait for the outcome of your application to submit. If your application is approved, you will be given an extension equivalent to the period of time for which you were ill. Late penalties will apply beyond this period.

New Course: Master of Marketing

From Semester 1, 2009, the Faculty will be offering a new Master of Marketing.

The specialist degree is designed for professionals who either take time out of their career or who are able to complete a challenging course whilst working. Students can complete the degree in one intensive year of study, including two semesters of study as well as summer and winter school. The part-time option includes evening lectures as well as some intensive weekends of study. A high level of commitment is required from students, as well as support from employers.

Need Money?

You can apply for assistance at any time of the year from the Financial Assistance Office, to help you cover your essential living and study related expenses.

New procedures for students requiring examination adjustments and extensions

Some of you will be aware that Disability Services is undertaking a pilot scheme with the Faculty of Economics and Business to put in place Academic plans for students who require academic adjustments such as assignment extensions and exam adjustments.

These have been compiled into one individual academic plan which has been determined in conjunction with a Disability Services Officer, and is forwarded to the UoS Coordinator and your lecturer. If you haven’t contacted Disability Services to arrange this then please do so as soon as possible.

You will be emailed  a copy of your academic plan, this should printed and attached to the front page of any assignments that are submitted with an extension as detailed in your plan.

This process enables students to have more flexible academic adjustments which do not require individual applications for extensions or exams, which we hope will be of greater benefit to you.

Information on Application Processing Fee for Current International Students

If you are a currently enrolled international student at the University of Sydney in your final semester and you who plan to continue studying for a new degree or program at the University you are able to apply early to avoid any last minute rush for an extension of your student visa.

You do not need to pay the Application Processing Fee. The Application Processing Fee does not apply to current international students.

You can apply now and get a conditional offer pending the outcome of your examinations at the end of the semester.
