John Girdwood is Lecturer in the Discipline of Accounting in the Faculty of Economics and Business at The University of Sydney. He currently teaches in the area of management accounting and has teaching experience in other management-related disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. John's research focuses on critical and poststructuralist perspectives on management regimes and governing contemporary economic life. Understanding accounting as a social and institutional practice, his current research projects focus on the historical circumstances of the: corporate governance and strategic management of the World Bank Group; green politics, sustainable environmental management and the professional accountant as policy activist; and continuing professional education (CPE), association management and accounting in Australia.
Prior to joining the Discipline of Accounting in 2008, he worked in full-time and casual lecturing appointments at The University of Sydney, the University of NSW and the University of Western Sydney in the fields of organisation behaviour/HRM, research methods and corporate policy and strategic management in education, agriculture and health contexts. In industry, John has worked in management, executive and consultancy roles in state and local government and the not-for-profit sectors. He has also been a managing director of a private family investment company.
John holds a BA (Hons 1), MBA and MCom (finance and accounting) degrees from the University of New England and a Graduate Certificate in Education Studies (Higher Education) from The University of Sydney. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the Australian Human Resources Institute, an Associate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and a member of CPA Aust ASA and Institute of Public Administration of Australia.
