Research in the Faculty of Economics and Business

About our Research

Research and scholarship is the foundation of everything we do. It is an expression of our engagement with our academic colleagues in Australia and internationally, and of our engagement with the professional and the business community. The Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney has an outstanding reputation for the quality of its research across a wide range of academic disciplines.

Our success in attracting competitive research funding has resulted in more than $27 million over the last 10 years (since 1999). In addition, since then the Faculty has also published almost 2,900 DEEWR-audited publications and maintained 14 in-house produced Faculty journals. The postgraduate research programs offered by the Faculty attract a large number of domestic and international students each year. With more than 170 doctoral candidates currently enrolled, the Faculty has one of the largest and most diverse higher degree by research programs in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Distinguished scholars

The Faculty has a number of distinguished scholars who have been elected fellows of the Academies of the Social Sciences and Humanities in Australia in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their respective fields of research and scholarship.

A large number of Faculty members are members of the editorial boards of leading international research journals. Major journals are edited and published within the Faculty covering fields such as accounting, development studies, economics, industrial relations, labour history, political economy, political science and public affairs.

Key Centres for Research and Teaching

The Australian Research Council (ARC) has awarded two prestigious Key Centres for Research and Teaching to the Faculty in recent years. These are funded directly by the ARC for up to 9 years. The two centres are in the fields of Industrial Relations (the Workplace Research Centre) and Transport and Logistics (the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies - ITLS). Both of these centres have established international reputations for the quality of their research and have been successful in attracting substantial additional funding from competitive research grants and consultancies from a wide range of external sources.

Interdisciplinary research

A distinguishing feature of the Faculty of Economics and Business is its commitment not only to excellence in individual disciplines but also to interdisciplinary research. Given the broad range of expertise and interests across the Faculty, it has been possible to develop major collaborative research activities across the business and social science disciplines. Two of these, A Working Australia and The Wealth of our Nation have been selected by The University of Sydney as National Research Priority Nominations.
