Drama, Music and Military perspectives part of new leadership program

01 Dec 2008

The Faculty of Economics and Business has joined forces with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry and the Sydney College of the Arts to create an innovative new leadership program. Dramatic, Musical, Military, Political, Philosophical and Ethical perspectives of leadership will be covered in a range of seminars, workshops, activities and experiences. In the program, insights from these diverse perspectives will contribute to the analysis of the attributes required of successful contemporary leaders.

New Perspectives on Leadership is a 12-day intensive program offered as part of the University of Sydney's Summer School 2009 which draws on the expertise of industry experts and specialists from across the University to educate participants about leadership from a wide range of intellectual approaches. The program focuses on the complex and varied challenges faced by contemporary business leaders.

The program will be led by David Grant, Associate Dean and Professor of Organisational Studies, and Richard Hall, Associate Professor of Work and Organisational Studies. Professor Grant says the course offers a critical appreciation of different leadership perspectives and a unique opportunity to learn the skills, knowledge and leadership attributes for a range of situations.

"We want students to really get their hands dirty in this program," said Professor Grant, "So as to give them a critical appreciation of the various perspectives of leadership that they will encounter they will be presented with number of key challenges that force them to step outside of their comfort zone.

"This program certainly exemplifies the importance the Faculty places on hands-on programs taught by world-class practitioners."

With a strong focus on teamwork, the program culminates in a group presentation to demonstrating how the insights generated in the program can be applied to a real business problem.

New Perspectives on Leadership (IBUS6007 International Business Special Project) is open to both award and non-award students across all faculties at the University or can be studied as a one-off program by professionals interested in management career development.

Limited places to this program are available so students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Expressions of interest should be sent to Lance Graham.
