Faculty Mission Statement

The mission of the Faculty of Economics and Business is to build and sustain the leading learning community in business, economics and government in Australia and its region.

In pursuing our mission across the inter-related areas of education, research and scholarship, and community service, the Faculty places particular emphasis on:

  • Intellectual and personal development - the intellectual and personal development of students and staff, as core members of the learning community, and the maintenance of a stimulating and enriching intellectual environment.
  • International orientation - fostering an international orientation which underpins the nature and delivery of courses, the composition of our student population and academic staff, our research and scholarship, and our involvement in the academic, business and professional communities.
  • Engagement with government, industry, community organisations and the professions - high value is placed on collaboration and strategic partnerships with distinguished universities in the region, with business, professional and public sector organisations, and with secondary schools. These relationships enrich the curriculum, create opportunities for students, build research linkages and advance scholarship and community service.

Educational Mission

The educational mission of the Faculty of Economics and Business is:

  • the preparation of men and women for professional and leadership careers in the business and public sectors, through broadly-based undergraduate and postgraduate programs;
  • the preparation of outstanding graduate students for research careers in fields of distinctive scholarly excellence;
  • the identification, encouragement and development of students for leadership roles at national and international levels; and
  • the intellectual growth of the staff of the Faculty.

The Faculty provides a learning environment in which diversity of students and academic staff is actively promoted and a wide variety of perspectives is supported. This is achieved by attracting:

  • high-achieving school leavers from across Australia, with a focus on New South Wales and, in particular, the Sydney metropolitan region;
  • high-quality international students, who add cultural diversity to our student body and extend our influence regionally and internationally;
  • high-quality PhD and Masters students in fields in which we have world-class scholarship;
  • academic staff from distinguished schools and from diverse cultural backgrounds, recruited both nationally and internationally; and
  • distinguished practitioners, from fields that have vital professional connections, to adjunct appointments.

The Faculty's educational programs place particular emphasis on:

  • curricula and teaching informed by research;
  • cross-disciplinary studies;
  • promoting international understanding and relationships;
  • life-long learning;
  • developing a capacity to contribute and provide leadership in an increasingly globalised and inter-connected world;
  • creating an awareness of ethical issues in business, government and society, and the capacity to deal with these issues in working life;
  • developing generic skills such as critical thinking, communication, problem solving and team work; and
  • mastery of information technology.

Research and Scholarship

Our scholarly mission is the conduct and application of high quality research and scholarship in business, economics, government and related fields.

  • Our research aims to make a difference. In addition to publications, our effectiveness is indicated by the impact of our research and scholarship - by the extent to which it genuinely advances knowledge and is applied to meet the challenges faced by business, industry, government and the broader community.
  • Our scholarly expertise and the outcomes of our research are disseminated widely and we promote the transfer of knowledge to the public and private sectors. We undertake commissioned research and research-related consultancies for business, government and professional organisations.
  • Building on a strong research base within the Disciplines, our research is crossdisciplinary and collaborative. The unique structure of the Faculty facilitates cross-disciplinary research in business and management within economic, political and social contexts. High value is also placed on collaborative research, development and partnerships with other faculties, other universities, and
  • business, industry and government agencies.
  • Our research is international in scope. We seek to be internationally recognised and to draw on and contribute to the collective experience of research and practice internationally.
  • Our scholarship and research inform our teaching and we foster a quality learning environment that attracts and supports high-ability research students.

Community Service

Our community service mission is to create and derive value from, and serve the wider interests of, the community in which we operate. We do this by:

  • contributing to public debate on issues within our fields of expertise;
  • providing leadership on committees and boards of business, government, professional, educational and community organisations;
  • contributing to the education of secondary school students and serving on State curriculum bodies;
  • supporting our alumni through regular communication and continuing education; and
  • serving the wider University of Sydney and national academic communities.
