Description

This major aims to meet the increasing demand for professionals who possess the business acumen to understand a company's business systems and information needs, and who also have the technical awareness to ensure that the right computer support is available. Businesses need these professionals to help them harness the power of modern technology in management decision making and the use of network based information sharing. The primary emphasis of the major is on the ways in which databases and enterprise information systems can be strategically used for business process improvement and innovation. It encourages students to develop the ability to contribute to the decision-making, design and implementation of business process change.

Requirements for the major

Students intending to complete a major in Business Information Systems must complete the following prerequisite junior unit of study (six credit points):

For a major in Business Information Systems, students must complete a minimum of 42 credit points of senior units of study, comprising:

  1. Two compulsory units of study (12 credit points):
  2. At least five elective units of study (30 credit points) selected from the following:
  3. Please Note:

    1. The units of study marked with an "*" will NOT be available for 2009 enrolments.
    2. CLAW2206 and MKTG3110 require the completion of additional prerequisites outside of those units of study listed for this major.

Requirements for the extended major

To obtain an extended major in Business Information Systems, students must complete the following units of study(including 54 credit points of senior units of study):

  1. All the prerequisite and compulsory units of study listed under the Business Information Systems major (see above).
  2. At least seven senior units of study (48 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Business information Systems major (those listed under point (ii) above).

Pre-2006 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Business Information Systems:

  1. One compulsory junior unit of study:
  2. A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Business Information Systems (including INFS2001 Business Information Systems and INFS2005/2020 Business Process Integration & Modelling).

Australian Computer Society (ACS) Professional Accreditation

Students planning to satisfy the Professional accreditation requirements for the Australian Computer Society (ASC) should include in their degree a prescribed set of units of study, including a major in Business Information Systems (at least 42 credit points in senior units of study).
