Description

The Banking major offers the highest standard of qualifications in the theory and application governing contemporary financial institutions. It includes a detailed examination of the workings of banks and related deposit-taking financial intermediaries in the context of the banking system in particular and the financial system generally. The core units equip students with an in-depth understanding of the structures and functioning of financial institutions, and issues related to banking in a contemporary, globalised economy. As well as providing the necessary knowledge of bank management, risk management and risk assessment, the Banking major offers intermediate corporate finance, equipping graduates with a well-rounded qualification that is modern, in-depth and competitive.

Requirements for the major

Students who intend to complete a major in Banking must complete the foundation level units of study ECON5001 Microeconomic Theory, ECON5002 Macroeconomic Theory, and FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance as a prerequisites for the major.

To obtain Banking major, students must complete four units of study (24 credit points), comprising:

  1. two compulsory units of study (12 credit points), as follows:
  2. two elective units of study (12 credit points) selected from the list of the following units of study:

Please note: ECON5001 and ECON5002 are the prerequisite units for both of the BANK units of study in this major. For this major, FINC5001 is the prerequisite unit for most of the FINC units of study in this major. For non-FINC/BANK units of study other prerequisites may apply.

Availability of this major

This version of this major is available under the Master of Commerce, Master of Commerce and Master of Facilities Management, Master of Commerce and Master of Logistics Management, Master of Commerce and Master of Professional Accounting, Master of International Business and Master of Commerce and Master of Transport Management and Master of Commerce.

Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Commerce or the Master of Professional Accounting may choose units from this major subject area as electives in their course.

The following is a list of the compulsory and elective units of study from the Faculty of Economics and Business which are available for enrolment this year.

Please Note. Students must complete the following foundation (core) prerequisite unit/s for this major: ECON5001 Microeconomic Theory, ECON5002 Macroeconomic Theory and FINC5001 Capital Markets and Corporate Finance.
