The Accounting major equips students with an advanced level understanding of issues and practices related to an ever-changing global environment. The core units provide essential knowledge in financial reporting, international bank management and financial services and an overview of global financial institutions and banking. The course offers a comprehensive introduction to the legal environment of business, with extensive attention paid to contract, corporations and property law. The course examines key issues surrounding mergers and acquisitions, as well as bank management, and provides students with the necessary resources for interpretation, reporting, prediction, and assessment in the public and private financial sectors. With its emphasis on risk assessment and management, an accounting major at the postgraduate level qualifies the student in the development of modern financial theory and its application to financial decision-making.

Students who intend to complete a major in Accounting must complete the foundation level unit of study ACCT5001 Accounting Principles as a prerequisite for the major:

  1. The units of study marked with "*" will NOT be available for 2009 enrolments.
  2. ACCT5001 is the prerequisite unit for most of the ACCT units of study in this major. For non-ACCT units of study other prerequisites may apply. Please check the particular units of study for details of prerequisite requirements.

Availability of this major

This version of this major is available under the Master of Commerce, Master of Commerce and Master of Facilities Management, Master of Commerce and Master of Logistics Management, Master of International Business and Master of Commerce and Master of Transport Management and Master of Commerce.

Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Commerce or the Master of Professional Accounting may choose units from this major subject area as electives in their course.

Students who wish to complete an Accounting major under the Master of Commerce and Master of Professional Accounting will need to follow slightly different requirments for a major. Please refer to the Accounting (Master of Commerce and Master of Professional Accounting) entry for further details if you wish to complete an accounting major under this combined degree.
