Description

Economics provides a valuable understanding of the overall context of business and government, and the technical skills to analyse economic and social data and events. It equips students to work on economic and social policy. It also provides key capabilities for students who wish to work in business fields such as financial markets, marketing, transport and logistics, international trade and consulting or the media. Economics at Sydney is a significant and influential grouping within the discipline in Australia. It is an important centre of policy analysis and review and one of the most important training grounds for economists within the region.

Requirements for the major

Students intending to complete a major in Economics must complete the following four prerequisite junior units of study (24 credit points):

For a major in Economics, students shall complete a minimum of 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:

  1. Two compulsory units of study (12 credit points):
  2. At least four elective units of study (24 credit points) selected from the following:

  1. All units of study marked with an "*" will NOT be offered for 2009 enrolments.
  2. ECOS3901, ECOS3902, ECOS3903 and all ECOP units of study require the completion of additional prerequisites outside of those units of study listed for this major.
  3. # From 2008, the Department of Political Economy will be part of the Faculty of Arts. All ECOP units are considered as Arts units of study for students commencing in 2008. Students enrolled in the combined Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws or the Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws from 2008 cannot complete any ECOP units as part of their major because they are restricted to completing only units from the Faculties of Economics and Business and Law for their degree.

Requirements for the extended major

To obtain an extended major in Economics, students must complete the following units of study (including 48 credit points in senior units of study):

  1. All the compulsory units listing under the Economics major (see above), and
  2. At least six senior units of study (36 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Economics major (those listed under point (ii) above).

Pre-2006 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Economics:

  1. Four (4) compulsory junior units of study:
  2. A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Economics (including ECON2001/ECOS2001 Intermediate Microeconomics and ECON2002/ECOS2002 Intermediate Macroeconomics).

Students in the following degrees administered by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies also have the option of completing a major in Economics:

Students in the following degree administered by the Faculty of Arts also have the option of completing a major and/or electives in Economics:

An Economics major or electives may also be available to students enrolled in other degrees in the University. Students should check the other faculty's course information for further details.
