Description

The Commercial Law major provides an introduction to commercial law as well as in depth specialisation in some of its key areas – stock markets and derivatives law, finance and banking, taxation, insolvency, trade practices and consumer law.These specialist units are designed to provide the basis of a professional capability in the area far beyond the general introduction.This major is not a qualification for admission to the professional practice of law as a solicitor or barrister.

Requirements for the major

Students intending to complete a major in Commercial law must complete the following prerequisite junior units of study (12 credit points):

# Students may substitute any CLAW 2000 or 3000 level unit of study for CLAW1002. Students who decide to take this option would then be required to complete at least seven senior units of study (including CLAW2201) for a major instead of six.

For a a major in Commercial Law, students must complete the at least 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:

  1. One compulsory senior unit of study (six credit points):
  2. At least five (5) units of study (30 credit points) selected from the following senior elective units of study:

Please Note:

All units of study marked with an "*" will NOT be offered for 2008 enrolments.

Requirements for the extended major

To obtain an extended major in Commercial Law , students must complete the following units of study (including at least 48 credit points of senior units of study):

  1. All the compulsory units listing under the Commercial Law major (see above), and
  2. At least seven (7) senior units of study (42 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Commercial Law major (those listed under point (iii) above).

Pre-2006 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Commercial Law:

  1. Two compulsory junior units of study:
  2. A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Commercial Law (including CLAW2001/2201 Corporations Law). (If students substitute another senior unit for CLAW1002 then a minimum of 38 senior credit points must be completed).

The Commercial Law major is an available option in the following degrees offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business:

Students in the following degree administered by the Faculty of Arts also have the option of completing a major in Commercial Law:

An Accounting major or electives in this area may also be available to students enrolled in other degrees in the University. Students should check the other faculty's course information for further details.
