Description

The Commercial Law major provides an introduction to commercial law as well as in depth specialisation in some of its key areas – stock markets and derivatives law, finance and banking, taxation, insolvency, trade practices and consumer law.These specialist units are designed to provide the basis of a professional capability in the area far beyond the general introduction.This major is not a qualification for admission to the professional practice of law as a solicitor or barrister.

Requirements for the major

Students intending to complete a major in Commercial law must complete the following prerequisite junior unit of study (six credit points):

For a a major in Commercial Law, students must complete the at least 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:

  1. One compulsory senior unit of study (six credit points):
  2. At least six units of study (36 credit points) selected from the following senior elective units of study:

Please Note:

  1. All units of study marked with an "*" will NOT be offered for 2009 enrolments.
  2. The unit CLAW1002 will not be offered in 2009.

Requirements for the extended major

To obtain an extended major in Commercial Law, students must complete the following units of study (including at least 48 credit points of senior units of study):

  1. All the compulsory units listing under the Commercial Law major (see above), and
  2. At least eight senior units of study (48 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Commercial Law major (those listed under point (ii) above).

Pre-2009 students

In 2009, the Discipline of Business Law will not offer the unit CLAW1002. Therefore students will need to complete CLAW1001, CLAW2201 and six other senior CLAW electives (as set out above). Students who commenced their degree prior to 2009 and have completed CLAW1001 and CLAW1002 may complete their Commercial Law major as follows:

For a a major in Commercial Law, students must complete the at least 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:

  1. One compulsory senior unit of study (six credit points):
  2. At least five elective units of study (30 credit points) selected from the senior elective units of study (listing under the Commercial Law major above.)

Pre-2006 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Commercial Law:

  1. Two compulsory junior units of study (12 credit points):
  2. A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Commercial Law (including CLAW2001/2201 Corporations Law). (If students substitute another senior unit for CLAW1002 then a minimum of 38 senior credit points must be completed).

The Commercial Law major is an available option in the following degrees offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business:

Commercial Law electives can be completed in all the degrees listed above as well as the following degree offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business:
