Description

An accounting qualification provides capability and credibility across a broad spectrum of careers. It opens the door to many other markets and professions where the ability to understand and interpret financial information is the key capability.

Requirements for the major

Students intending to complete a major in Accounting must complete the following three prerequisite junior units of study (18 credit points):

For a major in Accounting, students must complete 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:
  1. Two compulsory senior units of study (12 credit points):
  2. At least four (six-credit point) units of study or equivalent (24 credit points) selected from the following elective units of study:

Please Note:

  1. As ACCT3098 and ACCT3099 are worth three (3) credit points each. If students wish to include these units as part of their major they would need to complete at least five (5) elective units of study to meet elective requirements.
  2. CLAW2201 requires the completion of additional prerequisites outside the units listed for this major.

Requirements for the extended major

To obtain an extended major in Accounting, students must complete the following units of study (including 48 credit points in senior units of study):

  1. All the compulsory units listing under the Accounting major (see above), and
  2. At least six (six-credit point) senior units of study or equivalent (36 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Accounting major (those listed under point (ii) above).

Pre-2006 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Accounting:

  1. Three compulsory junior units of study:
  2. A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Accounting (including ACCT2001/2011 Financial Accounting A & ACCT2002/2012 Management Accounting A).

Professional accreditation in Accounting

CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia recognise the following program of study as satisfying the requirements for admission as an associate and for advancement to CPA status or for admission to the Professional Year Program of the Institute.
