Description

Governance involves the integrity and effectiveness of institutions in society, focusing especially but not exclusively on the functioning of the public sector. This major will examine central aspects of governance in the public, corporate and community sectors. It will examine what aspects of institutional structures and the environments in which they operate contribute to effective governance. It will be particularly useful for those wishing to pursue careers in the public and community sectors, and those wanting to examine how governance is central to economic and social sustainability.

Requirements for the major

For continuing (pre-2009 commencing) students to complete a Governance major, they must complete four units of study (24 credit points), comprising:

1. one compulsory unit of study (six credit points) selected from the following:

2. three elective units of study (18 credit points) selected from the following:

• GOVT6311 Issues in Public Policy
• GOVT6316 Policy Making, Power and Politics (if not completed as compulsory unit)
• GOVT6318 Crises, Disasters and Public Sector Management
• GOVT6331 International Public Management
• USSC6902 US Politics: Competing Centres of Power
• USSC6903 US Foreign and National Security Policy
• USSC6904 US Financial Institutions and Culture *
• USSC6905 US Economic Policy and Regulation

Please note:

1. The units of study marked with "*" will NOT be offered for 2009 enrolments.
2. All GOVT and USSC coded units of study are offered through the Faculty of Arts.

Availability of this major

This version of this major is only available to continuing students (pre-2009 commencing) under the Master of Commerce, Master of Commerce and Master of Facilities Management, Master of Commerce and Master of Logistics Management, Master of Commerce and Master of Professional Accounting, Master of International Business and Master of Commerce and Master of Transport Management and Master of Commerce.

Students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Commerce or the Master of Professional Accounting may choose units from this major subject area as electives in their course.
