Australian Scholarships Alumni

Indonesia 2-9 November 2009

The Director of the School, Professor Geoff Gallop, delivered a series of lectures in Indonesia to the Australian Scholarships Alumni from 2 November to 9 November 2009. In Jakarta he led a reintegration seminar for students returning in 2009 and in Banda Aceh and Yogyakarta he led a professional development program. The program was funded by AusAID.

The issues tackled included a history of public sector reform, leadership for change, planning for the future (in particular Scenario Planning) and skills for strategic government (including political skills).

Visit by Bangladesh Civil Services Authority

On 14 October the Director of the GSG Professor Geoff Gallop delivered two lectures to delegates from the Bangladesh Civil Services Authority. The delegation was led by Dr Md. Idris Ali Dewan a member of the Planning Commission. Prof Gallop delivered lectures on The Role of the GSG in Public Sector Education and Public Sector Reform in Australia Today.

From 6 October to 9 October the GSG received a 12 person delegation from the African National Congress (South Africa). A program delivered by the GSG focussing on strategic government, public sector reform, the work of the Australian political parties and inter-governmental relations in Australia was funded by AusAID and included visits to the COAG reform Council, the ACT government and Officials from the Commonwealth Government. The delegation was led by Dr Nakedi Mathews Phosa, ANC Treasurer General and Premier of Mpumalanga Province from 1994 to 1999.

Visit to Cambodia

The Director of the GSG, Professor Geoff Gallop, visited Cambodia form 20 July to 26 July where he gave two presentations: "Leadership for Change", delivered to ADS students; and "What a Minister expects of the Public Service", delivered at the Royal School of Administration to their current batch of students.

Visit to Indonesia

The Director of the GSG, Professor Geoff Gallop, visited Indonesia from April 13 to April 19 and delivered lectures on "Leadership for Change" to ADS students in Jakarta and Denpasar. He also met with officials form the University of Indonesia, Bappenas (Planning Department), Ministry of Finance and the Institute for Peace and Democracy (Bali) for briefings on public sector reform and education in Indonesia.

Political Advisers' Course 1-6 February 2009

Political Advisers' Course 1-6 February 2009

In co-operation with ALP International Projects the GSG has delivered another Political Advisers' Course for twenty senior advisers from the Asia Pacific Region.

The course involved visits to federal and state ministerial offices and to the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet.

The program focussed on leadership, strategic government, political research and communication, issues management, community engagement and consultation, and the administration of a political office.

Professor Geoff Gallop and Stephen Mills from the GSG delivered lectures. Invited lectures were delivered by Hon. Kim Beazley, LT. Gen. John Sanderson, Dennis Glover, John Utting , and Tim Gartrell.

The Course is part of the Australian Political Parties for Democracy Program.

Iraqi Delegation

On 5 December the Director of the GSG met with a delegation from the Iraqi Council of Representative to discuss Australia's federal system of Government. The delegation was led by HE Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, Speaker, Council of Representative, HE Sheikh Dr Khalid al-Attiyah, Deputy Speaker, Council of Representative and HE Mr Arif Tayfur, Deputy Speaker, Council of Representatives.

South Africa and Mozambique

From 3 to 7 November 2008, the Director delivered a course on Strategic Government and Scenario Palling for AusAID in Pretoria and Maputo. Attendees at the course were Alumni from Australian universities.

Sarawak Course: Managing SCORE and the future

From 13 to 15 October 2008, the Director and Associate Professor Richard Hall (Work and Organisational Studies) deliver a program on Scenario Planning and Change Management, with particular reference to the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). The corse was developed for the Sarawak Civil Service and Legislative Assembly. The Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud delivered a Keynote address.

Two of the GSG's units of study have been award a citation for teaching award:

  • Policy in Practice coordinated by Geoff Gallop and Richard Mills
  • Public Sector Leadership coordinated by Stephen Mills

The award is based on student feedback on the unit of study.

Professor Geoff Gallop AC has been appointed a Fellow to the Australia and New Zealand School of Government.

OECD Forum 2008

Professor Gallop AC was invited to participate at the OECD Forum 2008 in Paris from 3-4 June 2008.

He was part of a panel on Jobs and Growth and presented a paper Australia's Productivity and Participation Reform Agenda. Download Paper .

GSG academics Joanne Kelly and Geoff Gallop joined 1000 other delegates in Canberra to take part in the Australia 2020 Summit.

Bob Hawke talks leadership

Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke visited the GSG on 28 March to speak to students enrolled in the Public Sector Leadership class. Mr Hawke's address covered his own observations about the challenges of leading Cabinet and the public service, as well as insights into the leadership style of foreign leaders of his time including US President Reagan and Soviet President Gorbachev. Mr Hawke, accompanied by his wife Blanche d'Alpuget, spoke at the invitation of course coordinator Stephen Mills, Hawke's former speechwriter.

Ministerial Offices

10 & 12 March 2008

The GSG has successfully completed another induction program on behalf of the Department of Premier and Cabinet for ministerial staffers employed by the NSW government.

The program was based on the theme that a Ministerial Office is an important institution of government.

Amongst the issues tackled were:

  • Accountabilities and responsibilities
  • Relationships (within and outside government) and their management
  • What is the role of political advice and how does it fit within the broader context of advice to government?
  • What are the expectations of Ministers and Public Servants?

International Political Advisors' Course

4 -8 February 2008

The Graduate School of Government has completed a highly successful 5-day Political Advisors' Course for ALP (International Projects).

Attending the course were senior political advisors from Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Pakistan, Philippines and Mongolia.

The course was structured around three themes - Elections and Political Campaigning, Political and Issues Management and Strategic Government.

Participants were introduced to the work and functioning of Ministerial Offices in New South Wales and were given a comprehensive overview of the NSW State Plan.

Lectures and presentations were given by the GSG's Professor Geoff Gallop and Mr Stephen Mills.
