Event : Work Choices: Reform or Retrogression in Labour Relations? A view from the other side of the world
Thu 13th Sep 2007 06:00 am to Thu 13th Sep 2007
Professor Richard Freeman
Harvard University
Public Lecture,
Eastern Avenue Auditorium,
The University of Sydney
Australia's new labour relations law institutes the most radical change in labour institutions in any advanced democracy since legalization of unions. It comes at a time when unions in Australia and the other English-speaking countries are struggling to reinvent themselves and develop new policies for today's workers and global labour market. Professor Freeman examines its potential impact on employee voice, worker well-being, and economic efficiency, and compares it to recent and proposed changes in US and UK labour laws.
Some of the analysis in the talk comes from Richard Freeman's new book What Workers Say: employee voice in the Anglo-American Workplace (2007, Cornell University Press, with Peter Boxall and Peter Haynes) that compares Australia, US, UK, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.
