The Albinski Memorial Lecture Series has been established in recognition of Professor Albinski’s work in promoting international friendship and understanding. The second lecture in the Series will be given by Mr Lex Lasry QC.
In a career spanning more than 30 years, Victorian barrister Lex Lasry QC has been involved in many significant legal proceedings. Shortly after his appointment as a QC in 1990, Mr Lasry was counsel assisting into the fatal shooting of eight people by Victorian police. In 1998-99 he was involved in the murder trial of ANU law students Anu Singh and Madhavi Rao.
He has since practised in the areas of criminal fraud, immigration, customs and espionage, including the high-profile trial of former Defence Intelligence Organisation staffer Simon Lappas.
In August 2004, he was appointed as the Law Council of Australia's observer at the Guantanamo Bay Military Commission trial of David Hicks. His subsequent report concluded that the military commission proceedings were flawed, making a fair trial virtually impossible. Mr Lasry is also a member of the Council of the International Criminal Bar for counsel pracitising before the International Criminal Court.
From 2004-05, Mr Lasry was a member of Nguyen Tuong Van’s defence team, an Australian convicted with the importation of heroin into Singapore. His appeal for a stay of execution was unsuccessful and Nguyen Tuong Van was hanged on 2 December, 2005.
