Event : National Centre for Biosecurity Signing Ceremony

On 2 September 2008, the National Centre for Biosecurity (NCB) will officially become a joint-enterprise between the Australian National University and The University of Sydney. This important event will be inaugurated by the signing of an agreement between the two universities by Professor Ian Chubb, Vice Chancellor of ANU, and Dr Michael Spence, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney.

The National Centre for Biosecurity is an inter-disciplinary centre which explores infectious disease threats to health and security arising from natural processes and human activity. The centre’s goal is to foster greater understanding of a variety of biosecurity challenges, the connections between them, and the required policy and practical responses. Co-located at the Australian National University and the CISS at theUniversity of Sydney, the National Centre for Biosecurity draws on the universities’ expertise in the areas of microbiology, medicine, politics, public health, animal health, epidemiology, ethics, history and law.

The signing ceremony will be followed by the launch of a book, Ethical and Philosophical Consideration of the Dual-Use Dilemma in the Biological Sciences, authored by NCB members Professor Seumas Miller and Dr Michael Selgelid. Professor Miller will be available at the ceremony to provide some comments on the book and to sign copies. He will be introduced by Professor Merlin Crossley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Sydney.
