Event : Michael Hintze Lecture in International Security
Mon 18th Aug 2008 05:30 pm to Mon 18th Aug 2008

This August, Australia and the United States are celebrating the centenary of the Great White Fleet’s visit to Australia in August 1908. The Great White Fleet was a US naval force that circumnavigated the globe between December 1907 and February 1909, stopping in 20 ports along the way, including Sydney, Melbourne and Albany.
This year, events commemorating the centenary are taking place in each of these cities and are being hosted by the US and Australian Navies, the Australian National Maritime Museum, and the American Australian Association among others.
To help celebrate the events, CISS is hosting the annual Michael Hintze Lecture in International Security in conjunction with the launch of a book produced by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to mark the occasion. US scholar Dr Jonathan Pollack from the US Naval War College will deliver the lecture entitled 'America Faces the 21st Century: Implications for Asia and the Pacific' while the Department of Foreign Affairs will launch its book, 'Great White Fleet to Coral Sea: Naval Strategy and the Development of Australia-United States Relations, 1900-1945'.
