Political Economy (Faculty of Arts) (Undergraduate)

Description

This major is a second required major option for the Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies) and will be offered by the Faculty of Arts, through the Department of Political Economy in the new School of Social and Political Sciences from 2008.

Studies in Political Economy are a focal point for critical inquiry into contemporary economic issues, taking account of their connections with social, political and environmental concerns. Political Economy is an excellent background for a wide range of careers such as journalism and the media, economic research, teaching, public service, and management.

Requirements for the major

Students intending to complete a major in Political Economy must complete two prerequisite junior units of study (12 credit points), as follows:

For a major in Political Economy, students must complete at least 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:

  1. Two compulsory 'ECOP' 2000-level units of study (12 credit points), as follows:
  2. At least four elective senior 'ECOP' units of study (24 credit points) selected options specified for the Political Economy major in the Faculty of Arts Handbook.

Pre-2009 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2009, may choose to complete a Political Economy major as follows:

Students intending to complete a major in Political Economy must complete two prerequisite junior units of study (12 credit points), as follows: ECOP1001 and ECOP1002.*

* Please Note: Bachelor of International Studies students may substitute the compulsory junior unit of study ECOP1002 with ECOP1003 to complete a major in Political Economy.

For a major in Political Economy, students must complete at least 36 credit points in senior units of study:

  1. Any one 'ECOP' 2000-level senior unit of study (six credit points) selected from the electives listed in (ii) (excluding Pre-honours units of study)
  2. At least five senior elective units of study (30 credit points) selected from the those listing under the current Political Economy major above OR three 'ECOP' senior electives and one 'ECOS' senior elective.

Please Note: All senior 'ECOS' elective units of study require the completion of additional prerequisites outside of those units of study listed for this major.

Pre-2006 students

Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 must complete the following to be awarded a major in Political Economy:

  1. Two compulsory junior units of study:ECOP1001 and ECOP1002
  2. One 'ECOP' 2000-level unit of study (excluding honours units)
  3. A minimum of 24 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000-level) units of study in Political Economy

Please Note: One 'ECON/ECOS' 3000-level unit of study can be substituted for one 'ECOP' unit of study, however students should note that additional prerequisites apply).

Availability of this major

The Political Economy major is available as a second required major under the Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies).

Students may also be able to complete this major under the following degrees. (Restrictions on the availably of this major apply. Its availably is subject to the credit point restrictions on units from other faculties in course rules of these degrees and restrictions based on other compulsory requirements of these degrees).
