Operations Management and Decision Sciences Major (Undergraduate)
Description
Operations Management and Decision Sciences introduces students to the management of operations; the processes that add value for a customer. Operations have become increasingly important in the business world and are a major area of employment. At the same time, this major equips students with a structured approach to decision-making in business and managerial situations, where choice between alternatives is complex and can involve a difficult trade-off between multiple objectives.The major focuses on significant decisions that can be addressed in an objective fashion through quantitative modelling and analysis, combined with an understanding of the problem at hand. Such skills are repeatedly required in contemporary management. There is a range of electives offered in this major enabling students to select either topics in operations management or topics in decision sciences.
Requirements for the major
Students intending to complete a major in Operations Management and Decision Sciences must complete the following two prerequisite junior units of study (12 credit points):
- ECMT1010 Business and Economic Statistics A ; OR ECOF1010 Business and Economic Statistics A - Advanced (new unit for 2010)
- ECMT1020 Business and Economic Statistics B
For a major in Operations Management and Decision Sciences, students must complete a minimum of 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:
- Four compulsory units of study (24 credit points), as follows:
- At least two elective units of study (12 credit points) selected from the following:
- ECMT2110 Regression Modelling
- ECMT2120 Analysis of Discrete Choice Data
- ECMT2130 Financial Econometrics
- ECMT3110 Econometric Models and Methods
- ECMT3120 Applied Econometrics
- ECMT3130 Forecasting for Economics and Business
- ECMT3180 Business Risk Management (new unit for 2010)
- ECMT3640 Project Planning and Management
Requirements for the extended major
To obtain an extended major in Operations Management and Decision Sciences, students must complete the following units of study (including 48 credit points in senior units of study):
- All the compulsory units listing under the Operations Management and Decision Sciences major (see above)
- At least four senior units of study (24 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Operations Management and Decision Sciences major (those listed under point (ii) above).
Pre-2009 students (Management Decision Sciences major)
Pre-2009 Continuing Students who wish to complete the former Management Decision Sciences major, should follow the requirements set out below.
Students intending to complete a major in Management Decision Sciences must complete the following two prerequisite junior units of study (12 credit points):ECMT1010 and ECMT1020.
For a major in Management Decision Sciences, students must complete a minimum of 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:
- Four compulsory units of study (24 credit points), as follows: ECMT2110, ECMT2620, ECMT2630, and ECMT3610
- At least two elective units of study (12 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Operations Management and Decision Sciences major above.
Pre-2006 students
Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Management Decision Sciences / Management Science:
- Two compulsory junior units of study: ECMT1010 and ECMT1020
- A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) 'ECMT' units of study (including ECMT2010/2110, ECMT2720/2620, ECMT2730/2630, and ECMT3710/3610).
