Management Major (Undergraduate)
Description
Management is the process of planning, organising, leading and controlling the efforts of organisational members and using resources inside and outside the organisation to achieve set objectives. A Management major draws on subjects from a number of disciplines in the Faculty and develops a sound understanding of managing the internal processes of organisations and the relationship between organisations and their environments.
Requirements for the major
Students intending to complete a major in Management must complete two prerequisite junior units of study (12 credit points) selected from the following:
- ECON1001 Introductory Microeconomics
- ECON1002 Introductory Macroeconomics
- GOVT1101 Australian Politics
- GOVT1105 Geopolitics
- GOVT1202 World Politics
- MKTG1001 Marketing Principles
- MKTG1002 Marketing Research 1
- WORK1003 Foundations of Work and Employment
For a major in Management, students must complete a minimum of 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:
- One compulsory unit of study (six credit points):
- At least five elective units of study (30 credit points)selected from the following:
- ECOF3001 Business Strategy
- ECOS2306 Managerial Firms: Evolution and Attributes
- ECOS3003 Hierarchies, Incentives and Firm Structure
- ECOS3005 Industrial Organisation
- ECOS3008 Labour Economics
- ECOS3012 Strategic Behaviour
- GOVT2552 Policy Analysis
- GOVT2557 Public Sector Management
- WORK2205 Human Resources Processes
- WORK2209 Organisational Analysis and Behaviour

Please Note:
- The units listed above are those units which are being offered for the current year only. For details of units of study that available as electives in this major, please refer to the Faculty handbook.
- The selection of senior elective units of study depends on whether the student has completed the prerequisites for these units of study. Some of these elective units of study require the completion of additional prerequisites outside of those units of study listed for this major.
- Students who choose to include Government and International Relations (GOVT) units from the Faculty of Arts must meet the prerequisite requirements for these units of study as set out in the Faculty of Arts Handbook. The number of units students can complete from another faculty (non-Economics and Business) are restricted (refer to individual degree rules for details). For example, students in the combined Law programs cannot complete any units from outside of Economics and Business as electives for this major.
Requirements for the extended major
To obtain an extended major in Management , students must complete the following units of study (including 48 credit points in senior units of study):
- All the compulsory units listing under the Management major (see above)
- At least seven senior units of study (42 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Management major (those listed under point (ii) above)
Pre-2006 students
Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Management:
- Two junior (1000-level) 'WORK','GOVT' or 'ECON' coded units of study
- A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Management (including WORK2001/2201).

- Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws
- Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science
- Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies)
- Bachelor of Economics
Students in the following degrees administered by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies also have the option of completing a major in Management:

- Bachelor of Information Technology and Bachelor of Commerce
Students in the following degree administered by the Faculty of Arts also have the option of completing a major in Management:
- Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Arts (Languages)
- Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications)
- Bachelor of International and Global Studies
- Bachelor of Political, Economics and Social Science
A Management major or electives in this area may also be available to students enrolled in other degrees in the University. Students should check the other faculty's course information for further details.
