Finance Major (Undergraduate)
Description
The Discipline of Finance works in partnership with the Australian Stock Exchange, the Sydney Futures Exchange, the Australian Financial Markets Association and several of the largest banking, broking, accounting and funds management businesses in the region. A sound knowledge of finance is important for graduates in a wide range of commerce/economics disciplines. The units offered are designed to integrate a variety of practical applications with essential theory and financial reasoning skills.
Requirements for the major
Students intending to complete a major in Finance must complete the following four prerequisite junior units of study (24 credit points):
- ACCT1001 Accounting 1A; or ACCT1003 Financial Accounting Concepts
- ECMT1010 Business and Economic Statistics A
- ECON1001 Introductory Microeconomics
- ECON1002 Introductory Macroeconomics.
For a major in Finance, students shall complete a minimum of 36 credit points in senior units of study, comprising:
- Two compulsory senior units of study (12 credit points):
- At least four six-credit point senior elective units of study (or equivalent)* (24 credit points in total) selected from the following:
- FINC2192 Finance 2 Honours (3 credit points)*
- FINC3011 International Financial Management
- FINC3012 Derivative Securities
- FINC3013 Mergers and Acquisitions
- FINC3014 Trading and Dealing in Security Markets
- FINC3015 Financial Valuation: Case Study Approach
- FINC3017 Investments and Portfolio Management
- FINC3018 Bank Financial Management
- FINC3019 Fixed Income Securities
- FINC3193 Finance 3 Honours (Corporate Finance) (3 credit points)*
- FINC3194 Finance 3 Honours (Securities Markets) (3 credit points)*
OR
- Any three 'FINC' 3000-level elective units of study and either ACCT3013 Financial Statement Analysis or CLAW3201 Australian Taxation System
Please Note:
- ACCT3013 and CLAW3201 require the completion of additional prerequisites outside of those units of study listed for this major.
- FINC2192, FINC3193 and FINC3194 are worth three credit points each. Students who complete these units may need to complete additional senior elective units to meet the 24-credit point of senior units of study requirement for a Finance major.
Requirements for the extended major
To obtain an extended major in Finance, students must complete the following units of study (including 48 credit points in senior units of study):
- All the compulsory units listing under the Financemajor (see above)
- At least six (six-credit point) senior units of study (36 credit points) selected from the elective units of study listing under the Finance major (those listed under point (ii) above).
Pre-2006 students
Students who commenced their degree prior to 2006 may complete the following to qualify for a major in Finance:
- Four compulsory junior units of study: ACCT1001 (or ACCT1003),ECMT1010, ECON1001, and ECON1002
- A minimum of 32 credit points of senior (2000 or 3000 level) units of study in Finance (including FINC2001/2011and either FINC2002/2012 or FINC2004/2014).

The Finance major is an available option in the following degrees offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business:
- Bachelor of Commerce
- Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts
- Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws
- Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science
- Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies)
- Bachelor of Economics
Students in the following degrees administered by the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies also have the option of completing a major in Finance:
- Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Commerce
- Bachelor of Information Technology and Bachelor of Commerce
Students in the following degree administered by the Faculty of Arts also have the option of completing a major in Finance:
A Finance major or electives in this area may alos be available to students enrolled in other degrees in the University. Students should check the other faculty's course information for further details.
