Employment Relations and Human Resource Management Major (Master of Commerce and combined Master of Commerce programs)

Description

This major is intended for students currently practicing in the fields of employment relations and/or people management, as well as those wishing to develop careers in these areas. It offers an integrated array of introductory and advanced units of study covering all main facets of employment within organisations. The major is configured so as to equip students with an understanding of both the macro and micro aspects of employment, to develop their awareness of the relationship between the two, and to acquire a thorough grounding in the strategic, legal, ethical and behavioural aspects of the employment relationship. The electives allow students to pursue advanced study in specific high profile employment processes and practices, including employee recruitment and selection, development and performance management, reward management, diversity management, workplace bargaining, and workplace health and safety. The major is also configured to address the learning needs of graduate students wishing to acquire an international perspective on employment relations and human resource management.

Requirements for the major

Students who intend to complete a major in Employment Relations and Human Resource Management must complete the following foundation level (core) unit of study as the prerequisite for the major:

To obtain an Employment Relations and Human Resource Management major, students must complete four units of study (24 credit points) from the following:

  1. one compulsory unit of study (six credit points), as follows:

Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) accreditation

AHRI is the national association representing human resource management professionals and is Australia's leading human resources professional body. All courses incorporating a major/specialisation in Human Resource Management are AHRI-accredited. Students who complete this major as part of their course will satisfy the requirements for professional membership of AHRI.
