Business Information Systems Major (Master of Commerce and combined Master of Commerce programs)
Description
This major offers the essential knowledge for relating the most up-to-date information technologies to business and organisational needs with a focus on the emerging strategic role of information systems. The course explores the role of information systems in capturing and distributing organisational knowledge and in enhancing management decision making. Covered in detail are the issues and knowledge relating to business information systems, management and decision support systems, integrated enterprise systems, electronic commerce, business process modelling, knowledge management, IT project management, IT assurance and control, and change agent consulting for the IT industry. Students achieve a high level of skills and critical analysis in project management and practice (MS Project software), ERP systems (SAP R/3), business process modelling skills (ARIS software), design of distributed object systems and computer security.
Requirements for the major
Students who intend to complete a major in Business Information Systems must complete the following foundation level unit of study as a prerequisite for the major:
- INFS5000 Information and Systems in Organisations (formerly titled 'Business Information Systems' in 2009)
To obtain a Business Information Systems major, students must complete four elective units of study (24 credit points) from the following:
- INFS6001 Managing Information and Systems (formerly titled 'BIS Management' in 2009)
- INFS6002 Strategic Information Systems Management (formerly titled 'BIS Strategy' in 2009)
- INFS6004 Information Systems Change Management (formerly titled 'BIS Change Management' in 2009)
- INFS6012 Business Process Integration
- INFS6013 Information Risk, Governance and Assurance (formerly titled 'Risk Management and BIS Assurance' in 2009)
- INFS6014 Project Management (formerly titled 'BIS Project Management' in 2009)
- INFS6015 Business Process Management
- INFS6016 Technology-Enabled Business Innovation
- INFS6017 Strategic Information and Knowledge Management
- INFS6018 Managing Business Intelligence
- INFS6020 BIS Innovation Transformation and Change
- INFS6101 Information Systems Research A (formerly titled 'Special Topic in Business Information Systems' in 2009)
- INFS6106 Information Systems Research B (new unit for 2010)

Australian Computer Society (ACS) professional accreditation
Students planning to satisfy the accreditation requirements of the ACS should include in their degree a prescribed set of units of study, including a major in Business Information Systems. The required units of study are listed below:
- The core unit of study: INFS5000
- at least five advanced (6000-level) 'INFS' elective units (30 credit points) from those listed above.
