Description

This three year (full-time) program provides students with the opportunity to study in areas that are of particular relevance to the management and conduct of business, such as accounting, business information systems, commercial law, econometrics, economics, finance, industrial relations and human resource management, international business, management, management decision sciences, and marketing. Depending on the units of study chosen, this award course may also be recognised by CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia, the Australian Computer Society, and the Australian Human Resources Institute.

Course Rules

To be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce, students must successfully complete a total of 144 credit points, comprising:

  • 11 core units of study (66 credit points)
  • a major or an extended major selected from the Commerce subject areas
  • a second major or elective units of study selected from the Commerce subject areas or from the Faculties of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Arts, Education and Social Work or Science.
  • No more than 60 credit points in junior units of study (1000-level)
  • At least 96 credit points in units of study from the Faculty of Economics and Business (no more than 48 credit points in units from another faculty).

Please Note: Students who commenced their degree in 2006 may complete their degree under the 2006 degree resolutions outlined in the 2006 Faculty Handbook. Students who commenced prior to 2010 must complete their degree under the degree resolutions of the year they commenced. (Please refer to the Handbook of the year of commencement for details).

Please Note: Students who commenced their degree prior to 2008, may complete either CISS2001 or GOVT2558 to meet core unit requirements for their degree.

Majors and Extended Majors

Students must complete at least one Commerce major (or extended major) from the options listed in the table below to meet degree requirements. For most majors, students must complete at least 36 credit points in senior units of study (usually six units) in a single subject area. For an extended major, students must complete at least 48 credit points in senior units (usually eight units) in a single subject area. The exact requirements for majors differ and students should refer to the individual majors listed below for details.

Commerce subject areas for majors

Students may select additional majors and/or electives offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business or from the Faculties of Arts, Science, Education and Social Work, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources or from other faculties of the University of Sydney (subject to approval by the Faculty of Economics and Business). For details of majors from other faculties, students should consult the handbook for the relevant faculty (http://www.usyd.edu.au/handbooks).

Due to prerequisites and other limitations not all combinations of majors are possible. Senior units of study cannot be counted towards more than one major or extended major.

  • any additional junior units of study required as prerequisites for any major/s they wish to complete.
  • any junior units they may wish to complete as electives

Senior units of study

  • Students must complete the four senior core units as listed above (ECOF3001 Business Strategy is usually completed in a student's third year of enrolment);
  • all senior units required for their Commerce major; and
  • any additional senior units required for additional majors and/or electives.

Accreditation

Professional Accounting Accreditation

Students planning to satisfy the entry requirements of CPA Australia or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia should include in their course a prescribed set of units of study, including units of study from accounting, business law, business information systems and finance. Required units of study are listed under the Accounting major. For further information regarding accreditation requirements contact either CPA Australia or ICAA.

Australian Computer Society (ACS) accreditation

Students planning to satisfy the entry requirements of the ACS should include in their course a prescribed set of units of study, including a major in Business Information Systems. Required units of study are listed under the Business Information Systems major.

Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) accreditation

All undergraduate award courses incorporating a major in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management are AHRI-accredited. Students wishing to satisfy the requirements for professional membership of AHRI should include this major in their course. The required units of study for the major are listed under Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management major.
