Description This unit is concerned with the legal environment in which businesses operate. Essential principles of business law are introduced to lay a foundation for the study of more advanced business law units. The unit begins with an introduction to the Australian legal system and then focuses on the fundamental principles of the law of contract, tort and relevant legislation. Topics dealt with in contract law include formation of contracts, terms, factors affecting the validity and enforcement of contracts, terminating contracts and remedies for breach of contract. Basic elements of the law of torts, in particular negligent misrepresentation and including torts involving unlawful interference with business are also examined. The unit concludes with an overview of key statutory provisions that impact on the common law.
