The combined Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts program provides the opportunity for students to combine professional commerce-related studies with further studies in the humanities. The Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Arts offers advantages similar to the Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies), but is a five-year program enabling students to graduate with two degrees.

Course Rules

To be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts, students must successfully complete a total of 240 credit points (with no more than 96 credit points in junior units of study), comprising:

From the Faculty of Economics and Business (Bachelor of Commerce component):

  • Seven core units of study (42 credit points)
  • Either a major or an extended major in a Commerce subject area
  • At least 96 credit points from the Faculty of Economics and Business (with a minimum of 48 senior credit points)

From the Faculty of Arts (Bachelor of Arts component):

  • A major in an Arts subject area (At least 36 senior credit points);
  • At least 72 senior credit points from the Faculty of Arts

Students may select additional majors and/or electives offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Arts, or from the Faculties of Science, Education and Social Work, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources or other faculties in the University of Sydney (subject to approval by the Faculty of Economics and Business). For details of majors from other faculties, students should consult the handbook for the relevant faculty.

Enrolment Guide

Junior units of study

  • Students need to complete six commerce junior core units of study;
  • the junior requirements for their Arts major; and
  • any other prerequisite junior units of study trequired for majors or electives.

Senior units of study

  • Students must complete the senior core unit of study ECOF3001 Business Strategy
  • the senior units of study for their required Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts majors; and
  • any other senior units for additional major/s or as electives .

For requirements for individual Economics and Business majors students should refer the section Undergraduate subject areas for majors and electives. For the requirements of the Arts majors, students should refer to the Faculty of Arts website or handbook.

Honours Year

Both the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts can be awarded with honours. Joint honours courses are available.

For the Bachelor of Commerce students must successfully complete an additional honours year of study. For details of this program students should refer to the Honours year information listed under the Bachelor of Commerce.

For the award of honours in the Bachelor of Arts, students must complete successfully an additional honours year of study in any of the subject areas where honours units of study are listed. For further details of requirements for honours, students should refer to the Faculty of Arts Handbook.
