Description

The combined Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts program provides the opportunity for students to combine professional commerce-related studies with further studies in the humanities. The Bachelor of Commerce/ Bachelor of Arts offers advantages similar to the Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies), but is a five-year program enabling students to graduate with two degrees.

Course Rules

To be awarded the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts, students must successfully complete a total of 240 credit points (with no more than 96 credit points in junior units of study), comprising:

From the Faculty of Economics and Business (Bachelor of Commerce component):

  • Seven core Commerce units of study (42 credit points)
  • Either a major or an extended major selected from one of the Commerce subject areas
  • At least 96 credit points in units of study from the Faculty of Economics and Business (with a minimum of 48 credit points in senior units)

From the Faculty of Arts (Bachelor of Arts component):

  • A major selected from one of the Arts subject areas in Part A of the Table of Units of Study for the Faculty of Arts (where a major is available)
  • At least 72 credit points in senior units of study from Part A of the Table of Units of Study for the Faculty of Arts

Students must complete at least one major (or extended major) in a Commerce subject area to fulfil the requirements of their course. The available major options listed in the table below. A major consists of at least 36 credit points in senior units of study (an extended major consists of at least 48 credit points in senior units of study) in a single subject area. Arts Majors and Electives

Students must complete at least one major in Arts to fulfil the requirements of their degree. The available Arts subject areas (Part A) are listed on the Faculty of Arts website OR in the Faculty of Arts handbook. A major in Arts consists of at least 36 credit points in senior units of study in a single subject area.

Other Major and Elective Options Available in this Combined Degree

Students may select additional majors and/or electives offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business, Faculty of Arts, or from the Faculties of Science, Education and Social Work, Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources or other faculties in the University of Sydney (subject to approval by the Faculty of Economics and Business). Enrolment Guide

Junior Units of Study

  • Students need to complete six commerce junior core units of study;
  • all junior requirements for their Arts and Commerce majors;
  • any other prerequisite junior units of study required for majors or electives; and
  • any additional junior units that students may wish to complete as electives

Senior Units of Study

  • Students must complete the senior core unit of study 'ECOF3001 Business Strategy'
  • the senior units of study for their required the Commerce and Arts majors; and
  • any other senior units for additional major/s or as electives.

Note: All junior Commerce core units may be completed in the first year of study is desired and the capstone core unit of study, ECOF3001 Business Strategy, is offered for both Semester 1 and Semester 2 enrolments in 2010.

Please Note: This is a basic structure only. It is not necessary for students to follow this structure exactly as it is displayed. For example, the compulsory unit Business Strategy can be studied in either semester 1 or semester 2 any time from you third year of your degree.

Both the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Arts can be awarded with honours. Joint honours courses are available.
