This course is relevant to students, employers and professional organisations. It will help develop talented researchers into commercially aware and empowered entrepreneurs.

The Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise is designed to equip technology and science researchers with the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to bring research-based ideas and inventions to market. Essentially the course ensures participants gain valuable skills and know-how in:

  • The commercialisation processes and activities commonly employed to bring research-based ideas and inventions to market;
  • The understanding of relevant technical commercialisation skills including intellectual property management, financial management, project management, and market research; and
  • The interpersonal and communication skills relevant to research commercialisation activities, including leadership, teamwork and presentation skills.

Participants also have the opportunity to develop expertise in social entrepreneurship, enterprise in the creative industries, or in the commercialisation of research and other intellectual property.

Students currently enrolled in a research degree at the University of Sydney may be eligible for a scholarship to complete this Certificate under the Commercialisation Training Scheme. Further information is available from http://www.usyd.edu.au/ro/training/commercialisation.shtml.

Course Requirements Pre-2009

To be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise students (including CTS Scholarship Recipients) will successfully complete a total of four compulsory units of study (24 credit points):

New Course Requirements from 2009 Onwards

From 2009, to be awarded the Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise, students will successfully complete a total of four units of study (24 credit points), including the following 2 compulsory units of study (12 credit points)*:

  • IBUS 5011 Foundations of Entrepreneurship
  • IBUS 6012 International Entrepreneurship

  • IBUS 6015 Innovation and Enterprise Special Project

Please Note:

(i) * Students who commenced their degree prior to 2009 or are undertaking this certiifcate under a CTS Scholarship must complete the units IBUS6012 and IBUS6014 as their electives. Students who have commenced this program from 2009 and are not CTS Scholarship recipients may choose electives from those listed above under "New course requirements from 2009 - Elective units of study".

(ii) This program of study is meant to be a guide only. Students may be able to undertake the required units of study for these majors in a different sequence to that listed above. Students should not that this example has been developed using 2009 offerings of units of study and there is no guarantee that the units of study listed above will be offered in the same semesters in the years after 2009. Units of study listed above may also be available in Summer or Winter School sessions.

Entry requirements

For entry into this course applicants must have five years of relevant work experience or a completed a bachelor's degree, graduate diploma/certificate or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution (at a standard acceptable to the Faculty).

In order to be eligible for a scholarship under the Commercialisation Training Scheme, students must be concurrently enrolled in a relevant research program at the University of Sydney. An application form is available from http://www.usyd.edu.au/ro/training/commercialisation

Duration of course

Full-time: Students undertake 4 units of study per semester, completing the four units in one semester (six months).(Please note in 2009 this is only possible for new students commencing their Certificate from 2009. This option is not available for pre-2009 students or students on CTS Scholarship due to unit of study availability)

Part-time: Students undertake between one and two units per semester, typically completing the program between one and two years.
