The International Studies programs are designed to introduce critical issues in international studies and develop relevant analytical skills. University of Sydney degrees are highly valued by employers and graduates have found careers in a wide range of areas, including the diplomatic corps, international organisations, media, consulting firms and the public service. Up to half of the International Studies programs may be completed by distance (subject to unit of study availability).

Please Note

From 2008 for commencing studies, the International Studies programs will be administered by the Faculty of Arts. For details of the Graduate Certificate in International Studies, please refer to the Faculty of Arts website.

For continuing students who commenced their degree prior to 2008, please refer to the handbook of the year they commenced their degree (See handbooks archives for details).

Course requirements

(for continuing students only)

Please Note. The following course rules are for students who are continuing students enrolled in FG000 (who enrolled in this course before 2008). All students who commenced this degree from 2008 (enrolled in DG031) should refer to the course rules outlined in the the Faculty of Arts handbook.

To be awarded the Graduate Certificate in International Studies, students must successfully complete a total of four (4) units of study (24 credit points), comprising:

  • At least one unit of study (six credit points) from Table A. Core units of study
  • Up to three units of study(18 credit points) from Table B. Elective units of study

Entry requirements

This course is not available for commencing students. Students who wish to commence study in this course should refer to the new Graduate Certificate in International Studies degree offered by the Faculty of Arts.

Duration of courseFull-time: A typical full-time student will undertake four units of study per semester, completing the four units in one semester (0.5 years).
Part-time:Students undertake one or two units per semester, typically completing the program in one to two years.
