MBIS

The Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) is designed to meet the needs of students with a pre-existing knowledge of business who want to better understand the contribution business information systems (BIS) can make to their role as a manager within an organisation. The degree is designed to provide students with the flexibility to develop their expertise both within and across a number of streams to meet their specific career needs and aspirations. The aim of the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) is to combine theory and practice to equip graduates with the skill set necessary to effectively manage and derive strategic value from information and information related technologies in both public and private sector contexts. The course covers the complete information systems lifecycle from consideration of the contribution of BIS to business strategy, through the design and implementation of appropriate solutions to the delivery of the associated benefits. The MBIS incorporates an integrative project that requires students to draw together and apply material from the units of study they have studied. The MBIS has been accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) until 2008. Having completed a minimum of six 6000-level INFS units of study as part of the MBIS requirements students will satisfy the educational requirements for professional level accreditation with the Australian Computer Society.

Course requirements

To be awarded the Master of Business Information Systems, students must successfully complete a total of 12 units of study (72 credit points), comprising:

Two core units of study (12 credit points)
Two units of study from two of the Business Information Systems (BIS) streams: four units of study (24 credit points) in total
Two elective units of study from the BIS streams or other approved INFS coded units of study (12 credit points in total)
Four elective units of study (24 credit points) offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business (which are not restricted to students enrolled in other programs)

Elective units of study

(i) Business Information Systems (BIS) electives

Students must select two BIS elective units of study (12 credit points). These must be selected from the INFS units of study listed in the table Business Information Systems (BIS) streams not taken as part of the stream choices and the following unit of study:

INFS6101 Special Topic in Business Information Systems

(ii) Other non-BIS elective units of study

Students must select an additional four elective units of study (24 credit points). These elective units of study can be chosen from other postgraduate coursework units of study offered by the Faculty of Economics and Business (which are not restricted to students to students enrolled in the other programs. Students who csuccessfully complete the Master of Business Information Systems meet the accreditation requirements for the Australian Computer Society (ACS).
