Guidelines relating to Academic Approval

An Academic Approval is in reality a pre-approval to study a given unit while on Exchange. This is important as without approval you won't be given academic credit at the University of Sydney for your studies abroad.

When your exchange destination has been confirmed you should begin researching the subjects being offered in the semester and year of your exchange. From this list you will choose subjects and submit outlines for approval.

Unit of Study Outlines

A detailed unit of study outline is the key to gaining Academic Approval. Many students are declined on the basis of submitting short web page summaries or incomplete outlines.

A unit of study outline must contain as much of the following information as possible to be assessable by the Faculty:

  • Contact hours.

  • Assessment methods.

  • Topics covered.

  • Learning outcomes.

  • Lecture & Tutorial programme.

  • Recommended text and reference books.

  • Credit point value of unit at external institution.

Online unit of study guides rarely provide enough of the information we need. You should contact the International Office to seek more information from the relevant faculty at your prospective university. In addition to this you must also demonstrate that the unit is part of an equivalent level program.
