The Faculty of Economics and Business is delighted to introduce its new Faculty based Careers and Employer Relations Office established specifically for the needs of its students, staff and employers.

The Faculty recognizes the importance of offering its students a dedicated and enhanced careers office in an increasingly competitive international market for University Business Schools, to complement the existing centralized Careers Centre on campus.

Key stakeholders include: the faculty's students (and their faculty Clubs and Societies), academic staff, employers (public and private sector, and international), industry bodies and alumni. Over the coming months we will be seeking to engage with each of these groups in order to establish mutually beneficial relationships and relevant activities including:

• Year round on-campus profile building
• A greater range of offerings for both students and employers with a view to boosting students employability including
  • On campus lectures and workshops, involvement in group work projects
  • Workplace visits, informational interviewing, work shadowing, mentoring
  • "Internships" including paid and unpaid work experience, vacation work (short and long term).
• Involvement of the Faculty's alumni -sourced from the employer community
• Opportunities for engaging employers with faculty staff, including feedback on graduate placements
• Scholarships, sponsorship and prizes

The launch of the Faculty of Economics and Business Careers and Employer Relations Office was held on the evening of Tuesday 24th July 2007, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Themed to "Partnering With Business And The Public Sector: Growing Our Future Leaders" the event was hosted by Professor Peter Wolnizer, Dean, Faculty of Economics and Business with guest speaker Ms Ilana Atlas, Group Executive, People and Performance, Westpac. The strategic plan for the new office was outlined by the Manager, Rosemary Sainty and the speeches were closed with a word from Mr Nathaniel Ware, Dean's Undergraduate Scholar in Economics and Business, providing the 'gen Y' perspective.

The launch was a convivial and unique networking opportunity, bringing together key stakeholders to acknowledge and strengthen connections between the faculty and industry, whilst enjoying a glass of wine, music and the beautiful surrounds of the University's Conservatorium of Music.

Those invited included:

• Senior Faculty staff- including Chairs of Disciplines and academics active in this space
• Members of the Faculty's Boards of Advice and Foundations - often senior members of the business community
• Representatives from those organisations that provide scholarships and prizes to the Faculty's students
• Graduate recruiters from the employer community
• Industry body representatives
• Faculty alumni

The following day, Wednesday July 25, 12-3pm saw the launch of the Careers and Employer Relations Office on-campus to the students of the Faculty, where key graduate recruiters and alumni from within these organisations profiled their organisations, showcasing employer of choice best practices, vacation work programs, work experience, graduate recruitment programs for 2008.
