BIS Students

Daniel Pye

First Place, INFS1000, Semester 1, 2009

"Whilst initially having quite limited familiarity regarding the field of BIS it was a prescribed unit for my degree (Bachelor of Commerce). However, once the content was established, the relevance of the subject for future business education and professional practice became clear. In the current and prospective world of business, technology is evidentially emerging as a significant factor for enterprises to utilise to achieve competitive advantage and strengthen their overall operations.

Studying BIS provides the foundation for understanding the critical processes that underlie the employment of such resources. Furthermore, such knowledge is relevant in multiple fields of business including accounting, finance and marketing.

I would recommend other students undertake BIS subjects for two primary reasons. Firstly, in the ever changing and evolving world of business effective and efficient information systems are vital for development, growth and progress. Equipped with an understanding of both how they operate and how they are formulated is essential. Secondly, the subjects correlate well with other faculty major options, providing an exciting and enjoyable opportunity to broaden your commercial knowledge and add depth to your degree."

"Business information systems is an exciting field. Moreover, it is apparent that in today's world, business information systems are utterly essential. Employers are looking for graduates who understand not only the business, but also how the information system fosters the business. Crucial knowledge and skills can be obtained from studying BIS. In the business world, it is expected that projects would be assigned to employees. This is when the skills, knowledge, tools and techniques learned in planning and controlling the projects learned in BIS courses can be applied. What I have learnt from BIS courses has exceeded my initial expectations. To sum up, BIS is a great field of study".

"I felt that INFS1000 provided a good overview of the theory of information systems, as well as providing many examples of how this knowledge is applied in real life. The course was presented and taught in an engaging, informative, creative and interactive manner; it was easy to put in the hard yards studying a course that I enjoyed so much. The pleasure of working on a project in which I could see real-life applications to the skills and knowledge I was utilising, combined with the opportunity to work closely with intelligent, dedicated and enthusiastic people was the highlight of my INFS1000 experience, as well as the entire first semester of uni".

Huy Tran achieved joint first place in INFS3040, in Semester 1, 2008

"A number of organisations are searching for well-rounded individuals with unique attributes and skills which I believe BIS courses can and do provide. BIS courses equip students with highly sought after skills needed in any organisation large or small. There is a strong level of relevance in BIS courses to organisations and an equally dedicated team of academic staff with diverse backgrounds to cater to all areas of interest from information systems to strategy, through to corporate governance, risk mitigation and compliance".

"Studying BIS courses can greatly enhance my future career prospects as they have given me a great variety of skills ranging from being able to analyse and think laterally, to thinking creatively to generate feasible solutions to challenging information system problems. The BIS major can be a great compliment to any other area of interest in the business field: marketing, HR, accounting, economics, etc".

"In an environment which is continuously embracing technology in every aspect of daily operations, being able to effectively analyse the use of information systems and their potential benefits for an organisation is an asset that can only enhance a student's qualifications. I would highly recommend other students to undertake BIS subjects/courses".

"BIS courses go beyond the textbook and present to students real-life problems and scenarios, thus allowing us to develop as innovative workers and as thinkers".

"I would recommend other students to undertake BIS-based studies since it will allow the development of creative thinking and innovative working, both of which are vital to students as future workers and innovators. It is also important to understand the importance of information and information systems within the business world, and how to use these things in order to solve common and rare business problems for the success of a business and the development of an entire industry".
