Faculty Accreditations and Quality Assurance
The Faculty of Economics and Business is actively involved in quality assurance and accreditation activities aimed at further enhancing the quality of our teaching, research and community-related programs, as well as our processes for continuous review and improvement.
AACSB and EQUIS Accreditation
In 2004 the Faculty received accreditation by AACSB International for its business and specialised accounting programs, and by EQUIS, the quality assurance arm of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD).
- February 2008, EQUIS Accreditation awarded until 2013
- January 2009, AACSB Accreditation awarded for another 5 years
Professional Accreditations
As well as international accreditation, a number of Faculty programs are professionally accredited. The Faculty's accounting programs undergo periodic joint accreditation reviews by CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). The last review, conducted in September 2007, resulted in accounting programs offered by the Faculty being reaccredited for a further five years.
A number of the Faculty's undergraduate and postgraduate award programs offering specialised study in human resource management and industrial relations are accredited by Australia's leading professional human resource body, the Australian Human Resource Institute (AHRI), until 2011.
The Faculty's Business Information Systems majors (available through the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics) are accredited by the Australian Computer Society until the end of 2009. The BIS major in the Master of Commerce was awarded full Professional level accreditation in 2008 for five years.
These accreditations provide an assurance of our ongoing commitment to excellence in education and research, and put the Faculty in company with leading institutions worldwide.
CEMS Membership
CEMS - The Global Alliance in Management Education is a strategic alliance of leading business schools and multinational companies that together offer postgraduate students a unique blend of education and professional experience. Its first mission is to set a global standard of excellence for pre-experience Masters in management. Founded in 1988 in Europe, the network has grown steadily, largely due to the success and popularity of the CEMS M.Sc. in International Management (CEMS MIM), which is now ranked #2 in the world (The Financial Times, 2007).
In each country only one business school is chosen to be part of the CEMS alliance. In 2006, when CEMS decided to expand globally, they selected The University of Sydney as the Australian School to become an Associate member. In June 2008, The University of Sydney was accepted as a Full member, meaning we not only provide access to the CEMS MIM for our students, but are accredited to teach the CEMS MIM program to students from other CEMS Institutions.
The CEMS MIM is a prestigious supra-national business degree that can be acknowledged as the best passport for an international career. This one-year joint degree program is exclusively open to the Masters students of CEMS schools who meet very strict selection criteria and receive the CEMS degree in conjunction with their home degree. The Faculty has moved swiftly to take advantage of the CEMS membership with development of a Master of Management program that will allow a cohort of high quality students to simultaneously complete the CEMS MIM by undertaking a semester at a top European University and an internship with a leading international corporation.
CEMS also fosters faculty cooperation for teaching, research and doctoral education. The Faculty is now offering PhD units for a CEMS initiated exchange program to encourage CEMS PhD students to visit the Faculty/University.
