Students said the best things about the program were…

"General advice…that only an experienced student would know"

"Fostering new friendships amongst the mentees, which I could visibly see had a very positive impact on their feelings about uni."

Register online or at enrolment in July and on orientation day – Wednesday 22nd July.

How will this program help me?

Image of students at a mentoring eventThe Postgraduate Peer mentoring Program aims to help you to:

  • meet other new students studying in the same courses as you
  • get advice and guidance from a senior student who becomes your mentor for the first 5 weeks of semester
  • take part in free Faculty-sponsored social activities with fellow students
  • build networks to support and encourage each other and share information
  • make the most of your experience of university life
  • an online forum is provided so you can stay in regular contact with others in the program

Your group, led by one or two mentors will meet a minimum of three times during the first six weeks of semester. There are activities which will orient you to the Faculty and the wider campus (e.g. Library tour, transition sessions). Each group chooses further activities to do as a group - last year one group had a weekly badminton competition.

An online forum is provided so you can stay in regular contact with others in the program.

What will my mentor do?

Your mentor is a more senior student, typically studying in the same study area as you, who will help you to settle in by:

  • giving you information about all the services on campus (e.g. using your university email account, special programs for international students, buying second-hand books, finding a place on campus to eat, using the bus service)
  • helping you with study-related questions (e.g. information on using the library, how to get academic assistance, using the Faculty's online learning system Blackboard)
  • organising mentoring group activities and introducing you to other students
  • giving you general information about life in Sydney
  • providing a "sounding board" - someone you can talk to about your experiences and studies

Your mentor will not:

  • be your tutor
  • give you academic advice

  • stay in regular contact for the first 5 weeks of semester
