Excellence Awards

The Faculty is proud of its committed staff, recognising outstanding teaching with Faculty teaching excellence awards and supporting staff to gain awards from the University and beyond. Awards typically carry a cash value in the year of announcement and awards are valued in subsequent years by the scholarship index.

Faculty Teaching Awards

Nominations of lecturers for excellence awards are welcome at any time of the year, up until the close of nominations on the last Friday in October. A formal call for nominations from students is made four times a year, at the end of each semester and during Summer and Winter schools. A formal call for nominations from academics and staff is made once a year in October.

The closing date for applications for Teaching and Tutoring Awards is the first Friday in February. Applications for 2009 close February 5, 2010.

The Wayne Lonergan Outstanding Teaching Award
This annual $10 000 award recognises, promotes and rewards excellence in teaching amoung all full-time and part-time academics in the Faculty. A call for nominees will be made at the end of each semester. Applications close 5 February 2010.

The Wayne Lonergan Outstanding Teaching (Early Career) Award
This Wayne Lonergan Outstanding Teaching (Early Career) Award is a new Faculty excellence award. Applications close 5 February 2010.

The Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching of Graduate Outcomes
These two annual $5 000 awards replace the two previous awards focussing only on 'Research and Inquiry' and 'Ethical, Social and Professional Understandings'. Applications close 5 February 2010.

The Dean's Citation for Teaching

Geoff Gallup receiving a citation from the Dean 2008A Dean's Citation for Teaching will be awarded to Unit of Study coordinators/teaching teams on the basis of Unit of Study Evaluation (USE) feedback which provides evaluative data on the overall quality of the teaching in the Unit of Study as perceived by students. The three relevant USE items, which mirror the University and national Learning and Teaching Performance Fund key indicators of teaching performance are item 2 (Good Teaching), item 3 (Generic Skills or Graduate Attributes) and item 12 (Overall Satisfaction).

Citations are awarded to those unit coordinators/teaching teams who achieved the upper % agreement benchmark on these three USE items.

  • 86% agreement is needed for units of study with in excess of 500 respondents,
  • 88% agreement is needed for units of study with 150-499 respondents,
  • 90% agreement is needed for units of study with for 50-149 respondents,
  • 92% agreement is needed for units of study with 20-49 respondents.

Unit coordinators/teaching teams of units of study with less than 20 student respondents are not eligible for citation.

Vice Chancellor's awards

  • Up to five annual $10 000 awards for excellence in teaching
  • Up to three annual awards for excellence in supporting the student experience
  • One $10 000 award and two $5000 college awards for excellence in research higher degree supervision
